UW Huskies defeat WSU Cougars 75-65 | 5 Big Reasons Why…

BIG Pac 12 Win

The Washington Huskies beat the Washington State Cougars on Sunday evening at Alaska Airlines Arena to move to 11-6 on the season. With the loss WSU fell to 9-8 on the season.

The Huskies have now won 3 straight and they are only a half game back of Stanford and Cal in the race for the Pac 12 crown.

On the other side of the coin things are not so good for the Cougars, as after a solid start to the season they are only 1-4 in Pac 12 play and they have lost 3 straight.

Here are 5 reasons why UW beat WSU.

1. UW lit it up in the 2nd half

In their first half it was another case of the Huskies sleep walking in this game. Then the switch was flipped. Terrence Ross was the only Husky to score for the first seven minutes of the second half as Washington State used a 2-3 zone to frustrate Washington and hold a 47-37 lead.

Then came the Romar technical foul. After the technical foul, which came with 12:16 left the Dawgs played with the fire that their coach showed.

Heading into halftime WSU had a 6-point lead, but in the 2nd half UW out-scored the Cougars 50-34 to win by 10 points.

2. The big Dawgs run

With 12:16 left in the game it looked as if WSU would pull off the upset up 10 points, but then the Huskies caught fire.

The Huskies went on a 26-6 run and in that span the Cougars managed just 1 field goal in 8 minutes.

3. The 3 would not fall for the Cougars

After hitting some 3′s in the first half they went cold as ice in the 2nd half and for the game they only hit on 7/24 of their 3-pointers.

4. Terrence Ross woke up

In the first half Ross could not hit water if he fell out of a boat, but he came alive in the 2nd half and ended up being the game’s high scorer going for 30 points. He scored 26 of his 30 points in the 2nd half and he was the main guy that caught fire during the 26-6 run.

He buried 6 of his 12 3-point bombs and his 5th 3-pointer gave the Huskies a 10-point lead with 5:15 left in the game.

Of all the great halves of basketball we’ve seen by UW, this is as good an effort as we’ve ever seen by a Husky. It just shows you how capable T-Ross is.

For my money one of the most athletic guys ever to lineup for the Dawgs.

5. The Huskies dominated the boards

In the game Washington dominated the glass and they really needed to since they struggled on offense in the first half. For the game they had 24 more rebounds (44 to 20) and they pulled down 21 offensive rebounds while WSU only had 3. Darnell Gant came off the bench to add 8 boards, AND 13 points in the absence of C.J. Wilcox.

Next Up: Washington will have a big test in this next game at home on Thursday night facing Cal, who is 15-4 this season and 5-1 in Pac 12 play.

It will be hard for WSU to snap their 3-game losing streak in their next game, as they play host to a Stanford squad that is 15-3 and 5-1 in conference play.’
